Are dogs better exercise companions than humans?
Interesting thought: Exercise with your dog. One recent college study finds that dogs do a better job than people of getting older adults out for exercise.
The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine Research Center for Human animal Interaction recently compared a group of adults matched with shelter dogs to a group partnered with a human walk buddy. After 12 weeks of walking on an outdoor trail for one hour, five times a week, researchers measured how the activity levels were improved for the participants.
It was reported that people paired with dogs improve their (more…)

“I’m sad. Where is everybody? Where did my pack go?”
When summer ends, the kids return to school, schedules change, and doggie misses the “pack”. The house is so quiet, playmates are not coming and going, and maybe some family members who grew up with the dog will be heading to college and not returning for quite some time. This is a time of transition and the stress of schedule changes impact the entire family, including the dog. They are familiar with the one routine and now must adjust to another. With this separation anxiety and transition, behavioral problems can occur. How can we help reduce this stress and help dogs ease back into a different sort of routine?
Liam Crowe of Bark Busters USA offers some tips: (more…)

Who has more smarts: your dog or your toddler?
Does your toddler fall for the “fake throw” trick? Maybe not, but research is showing that even though your dog might take a few seconds to notice his favorite toy is actually still in your hand, they do posses the mental abilities of about a two-year old child. A recent study states that border collies are the smartest, followed by poodles. The research interestingly notes that the average dog also seems to have the social skills of teenage humans. They are interested in who is moving up in the pack and who is hanging out with who.

Doggie wants to Explore! Some tips and tricks that you might not have known when it comes to taking your friend out for a walk.
It’s 9 p.m. And our Labrador Honey hears the sound of the pantry opening and her bio-degradable poop bag being snapped open. She anticipates the sequence of sounds signaling that her leash it about to rattle and that means only one thing…time for a walk. More than a walk. It is time to gather the scents of pee-mails left atop shrubs, along grassy areas, and doggie business cards signaling other canine visitors have passed through on their nightly ritual too. (more…)

Al Franken’s first bill has been passed and its one we can put our paws together for: specially trained service dogs will be provided for disabled war veterans. Noel Brinkerhoff on Allgov.com explains how the bill came to be:
Teaming up with Republican Johnny Isakson from Georgia, Franken introduced the Franken-Isakson Service Dogs for Veterans Act, a pilot program to provide specially trained canines to disabled war veterans. Franken got the idea after meeting Luis Carlos Montalvan, an Army intelligence officer who was seriously wounded in Iraq and today struggles to walk and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Montalvan is aided, though, by his service dog Tuesday, a golden retriever who not only provides companionship but can help ward off panic attacks and remind his master to (more…)

“Bow OW! My ears! I’m scared!”
The problem: The sky is lighting up for the Fourth of July and pets are running for cover. Pet owners need to remember that dogs have more than twice the sensitivity to sound as humans and can hear sounds four times farther away The unfamiliar combination of painful, unusual noise and flashing lights can cause Fido to bolt. Animal shelters across the country report extremely high numbers of “July 4th Dogs” are rescued by good samaritans and animal control officers every year as they run off during fireworks celebrations. Dogs are willing to do anything to (more…)

Seriously, what would Fido’s all around conclude that effective pet owners have in common? Well, besides an abundance of unconditional love and affection, here are seven things that help put a smile on dogs everywhere:

- Training – How else can your dog learn what they are and are not supposed to do?
- Exercise – Ceaser the Dog Whisperer stresses this point. Dogs get stuck in the “wait” mode – we are busy, we are at work, etc. So why not reward them with some exercise both mental and physical?
- Good food and a consistent feeding schedule. Vets say not to overfeed your pooch. Limit treats. Avoid table scraps!
- Leadership – You are the pack leader. Help to create a regular sleeping, eating, and play schedule when possible. Plan some safe social contact to help socialize your dog.
- Play – Dogs love to play!! Bond with your dog! It only takes a few minutes each day and you both will reap rewards and develop a positive bond.
- Management – Help manage the chewing, jumping, high energy, and anxiety. Start with your pup when they are young.
- Patience – Having a pup or new dog can be a challenge so plan, read-up and know that these little pups will grow up.
