Teach the kids how to behave around dogs.  Be gentle!

summertime-pets-and-kidsYour kids are home for the summer.  They have friends over.  Some have pets; some do not. Young children are frequently left alone with the pets while parents “run a few errands”.

Can problems happen?  You bet they can.   What can you do NOW to help enforce safety when it comes to kids and dogs.

First off, all children should be taught to respect other living things.  The key words are “be gentle”.  It is as simple as that.   One day your children will encounter an animal, if it is somebody else’s pet in a controlled environment, or meeting a strange dog on the street.  What can you teach your kids now to help avoid problems later?

Pet Airways announced this week that it will offer pet only flights starting July 14th this summer.   Five cities including NY, Washington DC, Chicago and Los Angeles will first be served.   There are plans to expand nationwide.  Travel arrangements are web-enabled and your pets progress can be tracked online.   Trained attendants will take care of the pets with potty breaks and water and food available depending on the length of the flight.

There will be pet check-in’s and pet lounges to serve “pawsingers”.  Currently, most pets are transported in the cargo hold and considered baggage. According to the American Animal Hospital Association and the SPCA, 76 million cats and dogs travel with their owners each year.   Two million of these pets travel in the cargo holds of commercial airlines.  Over five thousand of these pets are injured in transit as temperature control and lack of sufficient  oxygen can be a problem leading to death via suffocation and heat prostration.  Almost every major airline has been sited for for repeatedly mishandling animals acording to the Animal, Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Pet Airways notes that pets will fly in the main climate controlled fully lit cabin.  Pets will quickly “disemBark” and not be left in the cold or heat.
